I have done some urban archeology myself and I found, through a friend, that there are still original tracks along Dominguez Street in Old Torrance where the shops used to be. The tracks are buried under a shallow layer of wood chips and mulch. I have some photos too. Also, the tracks in Torrance at Plaza Del Amo and Western streets, from the former Torrance Loop line, were partially removed due to the construction of new sidewalks and the rebuilding of Plaza Del Amo west of Western. The tracks directly under Western Ave are still there to my knowledge.Nate Vhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06751373436488188154noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9045235436087182302.post-79042181284278201792021-12-02T21:57:21.734-08:002021-12-02T21:57:21.734-08:00"Oh definitely," she said. My mind is a little foggy , But I remember leaving the PE viaduct , the interurban turned North on San Pedro Street, this is where I cannot remember the route. The Hollywood freeway was not built then and the San Bernardino (Ramona Freeway) was in it's planning stage. All I remember it turned east. Went over the bridge and follow the route along the planed freeway to "Valley Junction" and continued to the Eastern Avenue Bridge where I got off.Melhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09035251205432076842noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9045235436087182302.post-44952260989028083612019-05-27T17:07:42.534-07:002019-05-27T17:07:42.534-07:00Update on the former PE Vineland substation buildi...Update on the former PE Vineland substation building in Baldwin Park--it has been refurbished as part of a housing development and may house a restaurant or convenience store in the future.
In Azusa, a short remnant of the Monrovia-Glendora line remains. The entire park used to be a Southern Pacific railroad freight car yard, and the corn seeds that spilled from the covered hopper cars sprouted into corn plants onto the dirt and thus was the origin of the nickname "Cornfield" for the railroad yard. Those buried tracks carried a railroad spur that was meant to serve some industries in the area, but after the industry either went out of business, or was demolished, there was no reason for a railroad track to serve it, so it was removed. I had also wondered about why so many PE rights-of-way had remained unused/abandoned for years even after the freight trains were displaced by trucks. Ironically, a few of them were eventually sold to MTA in Los Angeles County for future projects (but don't get me started on the Orange Line).Matt Jacksonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13050419232547193194noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9045235436087182302.post-7479596830404312322018-01-02T22:23:15.697-08:002018-01-02T22:23:15.697-08:00I rode the Long Beach line between downtown LA &am...I rode the Long Beach line between downtown LA & Long Beach from 56 or 57 to 60, as a kid, accompanied by my father, and, once in 57, the Catalina Steamship dock special from downtown LA to the dock in Wilmington. The Electric Ry Hist Assn of S Calif (erha.org) has comprehensive info on the PE, as well as references to good books.
You wrote:
As a corporate entity, the Pacific Electric lasted from 1901 to 1953. But the rail system and infrastructure that comprised the PE stretched to as far back as the 1880s, and the Red Cars themselves, though no longer painted red, rolled on our local rails until 1961.

In 1911, the PE was bought by Southern Pacific RR, becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of SP, and, as PE, it lasted till about 1980, when SP completely absorbed it. In 1953, PE's passenger business was sold to Metropolitan Coach Lines, which in 1958 was bought by the LA Metropolitan Transit Authority, which refurbished & repainted car 1543 a nice light green (like their buses); the car is at TravelTown in Griffith Park. The other cars remained red. Since SP owned PE and the right-of-ways (land & rails), and was more interested in the freight business, SP wanted the red cars' passenger service to disappear, so, in lease negotiations with LAMTA in 60 or 61, SP either refused to renew the lease to LAMTA or made impossible demands. So the last red car ran on the Long Beach Line 4/9/61. LAMTA seriously wanted to convert the Long Beach Line to a modern rapid transit line but SP & PE wouldnt cooperate. Eventually the Metro Blue Line was built on the same property, but that's another story.
